Beeline Reader AI Literacy Platform
An AI-powered, K-12 educational application

The Beeline Reader AI Literacy website is a platform developed in partnership with Beeline Reader to create a tool for K-12 students to gain personalized explanation on key, educational subject matter. This platform creates an intuitive, inclusive, and informative platform for enhanced learning experiences.

Scope: Interactive Development + Social Good Course                 Tools: Figma, React, Python
Duration: 10 weeks                                                                           Role:
 Backend/Frontend Engineer

Question:

How might we use AI to improve reading skills for students in grades K-12, use accessibility tools to expand access, and highlight educated, knowledgeable AI use?

K-12 students often don't receive personalized learning for subject matters they may be struggling in, which exacerbates learning disparities in the classroom.

Problem:

Solution:

This application provides K-12 students the opportunity to expand upon any subject matter they are struggling in in a personalized manner. This application also includes key accessibility features to ensure that the application is inclusive to all learners.

Research:

We interviewed relevant communities members, such as students, educators, and EdTech leaders to learn from their experiences. These needfinding insights allowed us to understand how students, teachers, and key stakeholders engage with AI tools, as well as key features to integrate into our final product.

Ideation:

We brainstormed possible solutions, and settled on a webpage application to avoid collecting personal information, and make the application accessible from laptops, which is the primary electronic K-12 children use in learning environments. We made sure to integrate key features to ensure that our product accommodates and is inclusive to all types of learners.

Application Full Demo:

Key Features:

        - Customizable Reading/Age Levels: Reading passages are generated based on the user's reading level, age level, previous                     interests, and the specific subtopic that they choose.
        - Beeline Reader Integration: This application employs Beeline Reader's color gradient text to help users read more effectively.
        - Dark/Light Mode: This application includes the ability to toggle between light and dark mode for greater accessibility and user                   customization.
        - Adjustable Font Size: This application allows users to adjust the font size of the text for greater inclusivity and accessibility.

Conclusion:

We were able to create an application that is able to enhance K-12 learners' experiences, create an inclusive learning experience, and integrate the features of our partner, Beeline Reader, into our product. We worked to create personalized learning experiences for K-12 learners using the power of AI, while making the experience engaging for our users by incorporating values such as inclusivity, accessibility, and efficiency.

Although we were constrained by the time frame of an academic quarter, we were satisfied with the progress we were able to make with our application. We were able to build a working web application, with a functional backend using APIs, and gained valuable experience in brainstorming ideas, coordinating roles, and using React to create our website. It was a fun and enjoyable process to find creative ways to empower K-12 students. Many students in our target audience have never used AI tools, so we wanted to present a more beginner-friendly and safe platform for students.

This project, in partnership with Beeline Reader, was a wonderful opportunity to incorporate user research, educational tools, and AI-applications to help empower students and their learning experiences. I will continue working to center user experiences, inclusivity, and creating accessible solutions as a designer and engineer.
